Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Heliconia jacquinii
A clumping tropical perennial grown for its erect, boldly coloured bracts held above paddle shaped banana like leaves. Heliconia jacquinii builds into a dense stand from spreading rhizomes, so it is used as a block of structure rather than as a single plant, filling the middle layer of a tropical garden between palms above and gingers below. It is chosen over the pendent heliconias where the flower needs to be seen from a distance, because the upright inflorescence sits clear of the foliage.
Why This Heliconia
Upright Inflorescence: The bracts stand vertically above the canes rather than hanging, so colour is visible across a garden.
Clumping Structure: New canes emerge steadily from the rhizome, giving a thickening block of foliage each season.
Foliage Value: Even out of flower the broad glossy leaves supply the tropical mass that palms alone cannot provide.
Warm Season Vigour: In humid summer conditions growth is rapid, filling a bed within two seasons.
Cut Material: The stiff stems and long lasting bracts hold well when cut for indoor arrangements.
Ideal Applications
Tropical Borders: Massed along a fence or wall it forms a colourful living backdrop through the warm months.
Under Palms: Grown beneath established palms it fills the bare trunk zone with foliage and flower.
Poolside Beds: Used in frost free coastal gardens it delivers resort planting close to paving, set back from the water's edge.
Large Containers: A big pot restrains the rhizome and lets the clump be moved out of cold winter wind.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a continuous stand
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m for individual clumps
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, once soil has warmed
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moisture retentive soil with plenty of compost, free draining and never waterlogged in cool weather
Establishment Care: Water frequently through the first warm season and feed with a balanced fertiliser every six to eight weeks while the plant is in active growth. Mulch heavily to hold humidity at the base, and site the clump out of strong wind because the large leaves shred easily.
