Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Soft Water Fern - Blechnum minus
Most ferns sulk in wet ground. Blechnum minus is the opposite: it is a swamp and creek margin species that spreads by rhizome through saturated soil and forms broad colonies of upright, ladder-like fronds. Landscape designers reach for it when a pond edge, rain garden or perpetually damp corner needs to look intentional rather than neglected.
Why Soft Water Fern
Wet Feet Tolerance: It grows happily in soil that stays boggy for long periods, including seasonally inundated ground.
Colonising Rhizome: Plants knit together over a few seasons into a continuous stand, which suppresses weeds along a water margin.
Coloured New Growth: Emerging fronds flush pink to bronze before hardening to green, giving a change of colour through the growing season.
Cold Hardiness: It handles frost and cold wet winters across the southern states, unlike most tropical ferns.
Light Flexibility: It will take considerably more sun than other ferns provided the roots stay wet.
Ideal Applications
Pond and Dam Margins: Planted at the waterline it stabilises the edge and blurs the transition from water to garden.
Rain Gardens and Swales: A reliable choice for stormwater beds that flood after rain and drain slowly.
Wet Shade Beds: Fills the difficult damp strip beside a downpipe, retaining wall or shaded paving.
Creek Line Revegetation: An indigenous species for riparian restoration through cool temperate south eastern Australia.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.5 to 0.7m for a continuous colony
Spacing (feature/avenue): 0.8 to 1m where individual clumps are wanted
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring, ahead of the wet season in the target climate
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, peaty or humus rich soil that stays permanently moist; free draining sand only works if irrigation is constant
Establishment Care: Keep the soil saturated or near saturated for the first six months so the rhizomes can run and link up. Mulch lightly with leaf litter, and cut away any frost damaged or tired fronds at the base in late winter to make way for the spring flush.
