Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Seville Orange - Citrus aurantium
The Seville or bitter orange is grown for three things that the sweet orange cannot match: the most intense blossom perfume in the genus, thick skinned bitter fruit that makes proper marmalade, and a naturally dense, glossy, symmetrical canopy that takes clipping. Citrus aurantium is also the hardiest of the commonly grown citrus and the traditional rootstock behind many others, so it copes with light frost and heavier soils better than a navel or a mandarin. It is the citrus you plant when the tree has to look formal as well as crop.
Why Seville Orange
Blossom Perfume: Spring flowering is heavy and the scent carries across a courtyard, which is why the species is grown for neroli oil.
Marmalade Fruit: High pectin, high acid fruit holds on the tree through winter and is the classic marmalade orange.
Canopy Density: Naturally tight and rounded with glossy dark leaves, so it clips into a formal shape without going thin.
Cold Tolerance: More tolerant of light frost than sweet orange, which extends its range into cooler inland gardens.
Self Fertile: A single tree crops without a partner.
Ideal Applications
Formal Courtyard: Repeated in a symmetrical layout it gives the Mediterranean cloister effect with real fruit on it.
Large Planters: Its dense habit and slower growth make it the best behaved citrus in a substantial pot.
Productive Hedge: Planted in a line and lightly clipped after fruiting it makes a fragrant evergreen boundary.
Kitchen Garden Avenue: A double row along a path through a potager gives structure that holds through winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m for a clipped or informal hedge.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m.
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn. Avoid planting into cold wet soil in midwinter.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, slightly acidic to neutral. On clay, plant high on a raised mound so the crown never sits wet.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, keeping the water out at the dripline rather than against the trunk. Mulch well but leave a clear collar around the base, and feed with a citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in midsummer.
