Picual Olive - Olea europaea ‘Picual’
More olive oil comes from ‘Picual’ than from any other single variety on earth, and its dominance in Andalusia rests on high oil content and exceptional oil stability. Olea europaea ‘Picual’ makes a vigorous upright tree with dark grey-green foliage, cropping heavily and early with fruit whose oil resists oxidation and holds its quality on the shelf longer than most. It is a practical choice for Australian growers because it tolerates cold, heavier soils and moderate salinity better than many Mediterranean varieties.
Why Picual Olive
High oil yield: Among the highest oil content of the commercial varieties, so less fruit is needed per litre.
Oil stability: The oil is unusually resistant to oxidation, giving it a long shelf life and strong health credentials.
Site tolerance: Handles cold winters, heavier soils and some salinity better than most classic varieties.
Upright vigour: A strong, erect growth habit that fills a grove row quickly and suits mechanical management.
Early production: Comes into meaningful crop relatively young for an olive.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Commercial and boutique groves: The default high yield oil variety for serious olive plantings in southern Australia.
Difficult soils: Planted where heavier or mildly saline ground rules out more sensitive varieties.
Shelter row: Its upright vigour makes it useful in a windbreak line on exposed rural blocks.
Structured avenue: Used along a drive where a taller, more erect olive silhouette is preferred to a weeping one.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, with autumn preferred in hot summer districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soils across a wide range, including heavier loams and alkaline ground, provided water does not sit around the roots. Mound plant on clay and check drainage before installation
Establishment Care: Deep water once a week for the first two summers to drive roots down, then rely largely on rainfall with occasional deep soaks in drought. Mulch to 75mm away from the trunk, maintain a weed-free base and shape young trees to a clear single trunk with well-spaced scaffold limbs.
