Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Prickly Currant Bush - Coprosma quadrifida
Prickly Currant Bush is a gully understorey shrub, and it is one of the few genuinely shade tolerant Australian natives that will thicken up under a closed canopy. Coprosma quadrifida builds a tangle of fine, rigid, interlacing branchlets carrying tiny paired leaves, with sharp spine tipped twigs throughout. In late spring the inconspicuous flowers give way to translucent orange red berries that light up in filtered sunlight and are taken by bush birds through summer.
Why Prickly Currant Bush
Genuine Shade Tolerance: It performs in deep dappled shade under tree ferns and eucalypts where most native shrubs thin out and fail.
Translucent Berries: Small red orange fruit ripen through summer and are among the most attractive fruits of the southern understorey.
Impenetrable Structure: Fine spiny interlacing twigs create the dense low refuge that small bush birds need and that most gardens lack.
Moist Gully Adaptation: Unlike most natives it prefers a cool, damp, humus rich root run rather than sharp drainage and full sun.
Fine Textural Contrast: The tiny leaves and wiry framework read as a soft cloud against broad leaved ferns and rainforest species.
Ideal Applications
Fern Gully Understorey: Planted under existing canopy in a shaded courtyard or gully garden to fill the missing shrub layer.
Bird Refuge Thicket: Grouped closely it forms the protective mass that wrens and thornbills use for shelter and nesting.
Riparian Revegetation: Suits creek banks and damp drainage lines in cool temperate southern Australia.
Shaded Boundary Filler: Occupies the difficult narrow strip on the south side of a building where little else thrives.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and winter, while soils are cool and moist.
Soil & Drainage: Cool, moisture retentive, humus rich soil with free drainage below. It dislikes hot dry root zones and exposed, baked positions.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist through the first two summers rather than allowing wet and dry swings. A thick leaf litter or fine bark mulch to 75mm is important here, since it mimics the forest floor conditions the plant evolved under and keeps the shallow roots cool.
