Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Norfolk Island Tree Fern - Cyathea brownii
The largest tree fern in the world, Cyathea brownii builds a slender pale trunk topped by an enormous, almost horizontal crown of finely divided fronds that can each exceed 3m. It grows noticeably faster than the mainland tree ferns, which is why it is specified when a client wants a canopy of fern foliage within a few years rather than a decade. Give it shelter, humidity and depth of soil and it becomes the ceiling of a subtropical garden.
Why the Norfolk Island Tree Fern
Scale: The biggest of all tree ferns, capable of a crown spread well beyond 4m over a slim trunk footprint.
Speed: Fast for a tree fern in warm frost-free gardens, gaining useful trunk height each season.
Fine frond texture: Fronds are more finely divided than Cyathea australis, giving a lacier, more tropical shadow pattern.
Slim base: The narrow trunk lets you plant right up to it, so the ground plane is not lost.
Canopy layering: Ideal as the overhead tier above cordylines, gingers and lower ferns.
Ideal Applications
Subtropical courtyard canopy: A single plant can shade a small courtyard without the root mass of a tree.
Rainforest-style groves: Grouped at staggered heights for an immediate multi-layered canopy.
Sheltered atriums and light wells: Thrives in the still, humid air of enclosed spaces with overhead light.
Pool garden backdrops: The arching fronds give height and softness where a tree would drop too much litter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m for an overlapping canopy
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, once soil has warmed
Soil & Drainage: Deep, friable, compost-rich soil that stays moist without becoming boggy
Establishment Care: Water the trunk and crown as well as the soil, daily in the first month and regularly through the first two summers. Maintain a heavy leaf-litter mulch, shield from frost and hot dry wind, and site it out of exposed positions because the large fronds tear easily.
