Woolly Tree Fern - Cyathea tomentosissima
A miniature among tree ferns, Cyathea tomentosissima comes from the cool highlands of New Guinea and stays small enough for a courtyard, a large pot or the front of a fern planting. Its distinguishing feature is the dense rust-coloured wool that clothes the crozier tips, frond bases and upper trunk, catching low light in a way no other tree fern does. It is chosen where a full-sized tree fern would swamp the space but the same silhouette is wanted.
Why the Woolly Tree Fern
Golden indumentum: New croziers are covered in thick rusty-gold hairs, giving a genuine seasonal feature as each flush unfurls.
Small mature size: One of the few tree ferns that will not eventually outgrow a small garden or a raised planter.
Fine fronds: The finely cut, arching fronds are shorter and lighter than other Cyathea species, so it stays in scale close to paths.
Highland origins: Coming from cool mountain forest, it tolerates cooler nights than most tropical tree ferns while still disliking frost.
Container suitability: Its modest root plate makes it one of the better tree ferns for long-term pot culture.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard feature pot: Holds its form in a large glazed container in a sheltered, shaded corner.
Foreground of a fern grove: Sits in front of taller tree ferns to complete the vertical layering.
Shadehouse and conservatory planting: Excellent under protective structures in cooler capital cities.
Narrow shaded beds: Delivers the tree fern look in beds too tight for Cyathea australis.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, avoiding cold wet soil
Soil & Drainage: Open, humus-rich, free draining mix; it resents both drying out and sitting wet, so drainage matters more than for other tree ferns
Establishment Care: Mist or hose the trunk and crown regularly through the first season and keep the root zone consistently damp. Mulch with leaf litter or coarse compost, shelter it from wind and frost, and feed lightly with a slow release fertiliser in spring rather than heavily.
