Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Panzhihua Cycad - Cycas panzhihuaensis
Most cycads sold in Australia are tropical or subtropical plants that resent real cold. Cycas panzhihuaensis is the exception: it grows on dry, exposed hillsides in south west China and is among the hardiest cycads in cultivation, tolerating frost that would disfigure a sago palm. The leaves are stiff, blue green and held in a formal symmetrical rosette, and the plant builds its short stout trunk over decades. It is chosen where a cycad is wanted in a district too cold for the usual options.
Why the Panzhihua Cycad
Cold hardiness: It withstands frost well below zero once established, opening cycad planting to cool temperate gardens.
Blue toned leaves: New flushes emerge with a distinct grey blue cast that holds through the season.
Symmetrical rosette: Leaves are produced in regular flushes, so the crown stays balanced and formal without pruning.
Drought resilience: Its native habitat is seasonally dry, so it copes with extended periods without irrigation.
Extreme longevity: These are decade scale plants that hold their form and value indefinitely once sited well.
Toxicity warning: All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic to dogs and people if eaten, so consider placement in a pet household.
Ideal Applications
Architectural accent: A single plant against a rendered wall or beside a modern entry gives strong geometric form.
Dry garden bed: Combined with agaves, aloes and gravel it fits low water landscape schemes precisely.
Large feature pot: Slow growth and drought tolerance make it one of the best long term container subjects available.
Formal repeated planting: Set at even spacing along a terrace the matched rosettes create a strong rhythm.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. For a mass planting allow 1.5 to 2m between crowns
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m so each rosette is seen complete
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, into warming soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained gritty or sandy soil. Raise or mound the planting position in clay, because a wet crown or wet roots will rot
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first warm season and then only during extended dry spells, keeping the plant on the dry side rather than the wet. Use a gravel mulch rather than fine organic matter around the trunk base, feed lightly in spring, and remove old leaves only once they have fully yellowed so the plant retains its reserves.
