Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dioon mejiae
A big, upright Central American cycad with stiff blue-green fronds held in a formal vase rather than an arching crown, Dioon mejiae is the species to specify when a cycad needs to hold its own beside mature palms and large-leaved tropicals. It grows on steep, well-drained slopes in Honduran forest, which translates into good sun tolerance combined with a tolerance for regular rainfall that many desert cycads lack. The trunk thickens steadily and becomes a genuine feature in its own right.
Why Dioon mejiae
Upright Crown: Fronds are held stiffly upward and outward, giving strong vertical presence.
Scale: One of the larger cultivated cycads, capable of matching a mature palm for mass.
Sun and Rain Tolerance: Handles full sun and summer humidity better than most cycads sold here.
Blue-Green Tone: Cool foliage colour that separates cleanly from the greens around it.
Structural Trunk: Builds a thick, patterned caudex that lifts the crown with age.
Toxicity warning: All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic to dogs and people if eaten, so consider placement in a pet household.
Ideal Applications
Resort-Scale Feature: Anchors an entry bed or arrival court where a single plant must carry the composition.
Tropical Border Backbone: Gives permanent structure among gingers, heliconias and cordylines.
Large Container Statement: Reads as instant maturity in a large pot on a terrace or podium.
Slope and Embankment Planting: Thrives on the sharp drainage of a graded bank.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free-draining soil with organic matter; mound above grade on clay sites
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week for the first two summers, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Mulch generously but keep the material away from the caudex, and stake large specimens until the root plate anchors.
