Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Assorted Hydrangea - Hydrangea spp.
Hydrangeas are the standard answer to the hardest spot in an Australian garden: the shaded southern side where nothing flowers. Hydrangea macrophylla and its relatives carry large domed or flattened heads through summer, hold them for months as they age to antique tones, and dry well on the stem. Supplied as an assortment, this planting gives a mixed run of colours rather than a single matched cultivar, which suits a naturalistic bed better than a formal one.
Why Hydrangea
Summer Flowering: Heads open from December and hold their form well into March, long after most shrubs have finished.
Soil Driven Colour: On mophead types acidic soil produces blue flowers and alkaline soil produces pink, so colour can be shifted deliberately.
Shade Performance: It flowers properly in morning sun with afternoon shade, which is exactly where most gardens have a gap.
Dried Flower Value: Heads left on the plant age to green and burgundy and can be cut for indoor arrangements.
Quick Recovery: Pruned hard in late winter it rebuilds a full framework and flowers again the same season.
Ideal Applications
South facing garden beds: The shaded strip beside a house or fence is its natural home.
Under deciduous canopy: Beneath a maple, elm or ornamental pear it gets spring light and summer shade.
Cutting garden: A run of mixed colours gives months of cut flowers from a small area.
Shaded terrace pots: Large containers work well provided they never dry out through summer.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1m to 1.2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5m to 2m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, avoiding mid summer
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil. Adjust pH deliberately if colour matters: below 5.5 for blue tones, above 6.5 for pink, with white cultivars unaffected either way.
Establishment Care: Water deeply through hot weather, since wilting in the first summer sets the plant back badly and scorches the flower heads. Mulch to 75mm with compost or leaf litter, and keep the plant out of hot afternoon sun and reflected heat from paving or west facing walls.
