Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Japanese spindle - Euonymus japonicus
Euonymus japonicus is a dense evergreen shrub with glossy, finely toothed leaves, native to the coastal scrub of Japan, Korea and China. Left unclipped it forms a broad, rounded shrub of 2 to 4m, and under the shears it holds a crisp formal line and accepts hard reshaping. This is the full, green leaved species from which the narrow columnar selections were chosen, with the wider habit a conventional hedge or screen needs. All parts, the orange coated seeds above all, are poisonous if swallowed, so plant it away from where young children play and pets chew.
Why Japanese spindle
Salt Spray Resistance: Foliage stays unmarked on front-row beach and bayside sites.
Close-Packed Foliage: Leathery leaves crowd every stem, so the screen stays solid right down to the base.
Full Width Screen: Its broad, bushy habit fills a standard hedge bed and closes the gaps a columnar form leaves open.
Sun or Part Shade: It holds its colour in full sun and keeps its density in part shade beside buildings and fences.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Hedging: A formal or informal hedge for seaside gardens that take onshore wind and spray.
Boundary Screening: A continuous row along a side or rear fence knits into full privacy above head height.
Topiary and Clipped Forms: It shapes well into balls, blocks and cones for formal entries and terraces.
Shaded Side Courtyards: Clipped as a screen in the bright shade of a side courtyard, where sun-hungry hedges thin out.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.9m for a dense hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m for individual specimens or clipped forms
Best Planting Season: Spring or early autumn, out of the hottest weeks
Soil & Drainage: Any free-draining soil, coastal sand included once organic matter is dug in; it dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Soak the hedge line deeply twice a week until fresh growth shows, then weekly through its first summer. Shear two or three times a year in the growing season rather than once hard. Powdery mildew and euonymus scale are the two problems to watch; both build up where air is still, so avoid planting hard against a solid wall.
