Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dwarf Pohutukawa - Metrosideros excelsa ‘Nana’
‘Nana’ keeps everything that makes pohutukawa valuable on the coast and removes its one drawback, which is size. Rather than a spreading tree, Metrosideros excelsa ‘Nana’ forms a rounded shrub of 1.5 to 3m with thick, grey green, felt backed leaves that shrug off salt spray and wind. Crimson brush flowers open through early summer, right on cue for the Christmas holidays.
Why Dwarf Pohutukawa
Salt and Wind: One of the most reliable shrubs available for a front line coastal position.
Flowering: Dense crimson stamen flowers through December and January, heavy enough to colour the whole plant.
Foliage: Leathery grey green leaves with white felted undersides that hold condition in exposed sites.
Compact Habit: Naturally rounded and dense, needing very little pruning to keep a good shape.
Poor Soil Tolerance: Thrives in sand and thin coastal soils where richer shrubs struggle.
Ideal Applications
Coastal hedge: A clipped or informal low screen along a beachside boundary.
Slope mass planting: Groups hold soil on banks and verges in exposed positions.
Planter box: Suits raised planters and large pots on balconies and rooftops.
Mixed shrub border: Its grey foliage separates and calms brighter flowering neighbours.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8-1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5-2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn, avoiding mid winter in frost prone districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or loamy soil, with no tolerance of constantly wet ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer, then only during prolonged dry weather. Mulch lightly and shear straight after flowering if a tighter form is wanted, since next season's flowers form on this season's growth.
