Kashmir Cypress - Cupressus cashmeriana
The Kashmir cypress is the weeping blue conifer, and nothing else in the genus looks quite like it. Cupressus cashmeriana carries its foliage in flattened, pendulous sprays of soft silver blue that hang and sway from arching branches, so the tree moves visibly in the lightest breeze. It has a conical outline overall but a soft, draped surface, which makes it read very differently from the hard upright cypresses used for screening. Given shelter and reasonable moisture it is one of the most graceful large conifers grown in Australia.
Why the Kashmir Cypress
Weeping foliage: Flat sprays hang vertically from the branches, giving the tree a curtain like surface texture.
Silver blue colour: A soft glaucous blue that holds year round and separates strongly from green hedging behind it.
Movement: The pendulous sprays respond to the slightest air movement, adding an animated quality to a static planting.
Soft outline: Unlike the columnar cypresses, it forms a broad, gently tapering cone that never looks rigid.
Warm temperate adaptability: It performs in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the subtropical highlands, where many blue conifers struggle.
Ideal Applications
Lawn specimen: Standing alone with room on all sides, the full weeping skirt is displayed to ground level.
Tall soft screen: A spaced row gives height and privacy without the hard architectural line of a clipped cypress hedge.
Entrance framing: A pair either side of a gate or driveway gives scale and formality with a softer character.
Large garden backdrop: Its blue tone sets off flowering trees and deciduous foliage planted in front of it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m centres for a screen row, allowing the weeping habit to remain visible
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m centres, and well clear of buildings and paving
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding hard frost periods and midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, free draining soil of reasonable fertility. It is less drought hardy than other cypresses and dislikes both waterlogging and prolonged dryness
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, as young plants have no drought reserve and will brown irreversibly if allowed to dry. Mulch to 75mm beyond the drip line, stake against strong wind for the first two years in exposed positions, and shelter young trees from hard frost until the leader has hardened.
