Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Blue Nolina - Nolina nelsonii
Nolina nelsonii builds a dense sphere of stiff, narrow, blue grey leaves that radiate in every direction, and over many years it slowly lifts that rosette onto a thick woody trunk. It comes from the limestone slopes of north eastern Mexico, so it combines serious drought tolerance with real frost hardiness, a combination that suits inland and cold temperate Australian gardens where most architectural succulents fail. Unlike agave or many yuccas its leaves lack a hard terminal spine, which makes it far safer to use near paths and seating.
Why Blue Nolina
Blue Grey Rosette: A dense, fine textured sphere of leaves that holds its colour through summer heat and winter cold alike.
No Terminal Spine: Leaf tips are fine and flexible rather than rigidly spined, so it can be planted where an agave would be a hazard.
Trunk Development: A stout trunk forms very slowly, lifting the head and turning the plant into a piece of sculpture over time.
Frost and Drought Hardy: It handles hard frost and long rainless periods equally well, given sharp drainage.
Very Low Maintenance: Nothing to prune, deadhead or feed once it is established in the right soil.
Ideal Applications
Arid Garden Centrepiece: The structural anchor of a gravel, rock or dry climate planting.
Inland and Cold Region Design: Delivers a desert look in districts with frost, where many succulents will not survive winter.
Wide Bowl or Planter: The rosette form suits a broad, shallow, sharply drained container.
Path and Seating Edge: Its soft leaf tips allow architectural planting right beside circulation routes.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp, fast drainage is essential. Sandy, gravelly or heavily amended soil, neutral to alkaline, with the crown planted proud of grade. Cold wet soil in winter will rot it
Establishment Care: Water occasionally through the first warm season only, then leave it to itself, since established plants need no summer irrigation in most Australian climates. Mulch with gravel or crushed rock rather than organic material to keep the base dry, keep irrigation spray out of the crown, and simply pull away the skirt of old dry leaves if a clean trunk is preferred.
