Frantoio Olive (Standard) - Olea europaea ‘Frantoio’
Frantoio is the classic Tuscan oil olive, and trained as a standard it becomes a formal element: a clear grey trunk carrying a rounded head of narrow leaves that flash silver underneath every time the wind moves. Olea europaea ‘Frantoio’ is self-fertile and a heavy, dependable cropper of small, high-oil fruit, so a single tree by a door still produces. As a clipped standard it delivers the discipline of a formal topiary with the drought hardiness of a Mediterranean tree, which is why it has largely replaced thirstier standards in Australian courtyard design.
Why Frantoio
Self-Fertile Cropping: It sets fruit without a partner and also acts as a reliable pollinator for other olive cultivars nearby.
High Oil Content: The small black fruit is a premium oil variety rather than a table olive, ripening late autumn into winter.
Silver Foliage: Narrow grey-green leaves with silver undersides give constant movement and light in a still courtyard.
Holds a Clipped Shape: It responds well to shearing, so the head stays as a defined ball or dome with one or two cuts a year.
Genuine Drought Hardiness: Once established it survives on very little water and tolerates heat, wind and coastal salt.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Formal Driveway Rows: Evenly spaced standards create rhythm and structure along an approach.
Entry Pairs: Two matched trees flanking a doorway or gate, in ground or in large pots.
Courtyard and Terrace: The confined root run of a paved courtyard actually suits its drainage preference.
Poolside Planting: Tolerant of reflected heat and splash, with fine leaf litter that is easily managed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m in a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring; avoid the coldest weeks in frost-prone inland districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of almost any type including alkaline, rocky and sandy ground; waterlogging is the one thing it will not survive
Establishment Care: Water deeply but infrequently, roughly weekly through the first summer, to encourage deep rooting rather than a shallow mat. Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk to prevent collar rot, and trim the head after harvest each year to maintain the shape and keep the crown open.
