Del Morocco Olive - Olea europaea ‘Del Morocco’
‘Del Morocco’ is grown in Australia as a large fruited olive, valued by home growers who want fruit worth curing as well as the silver canopy. Olea europaea carries narrow grey green leaves with silver undersides that flash in wind, on a gnarled trunk that thickens into real character over decades. Olives earn their place in dry Australian gardens because they hold that silver colour through drought, heat and alkaline soil that would flatten most evergreens.
Why Del Morocco Olive
Fruit Size: Selected as a large fruited type, it suits growers intending to cure a table crop rather than press oil.
Silver Canopy: The two toned leaf gives a shimmering grey green mass that lightens dark garden corners.
Drought Endurance: An established tree survives on rainfall alone across most of southern Australia.
Trunk Character: Bark furrows and the trunk contorts with age, so the tree improves rather than declines.
Salt and Wind Tolerance: It stands up to coastal exposure and hot dry inland wind without leaf burn.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Mediterranean Courtyards: A single tree over gravel and rosemary sets the whole tone of that style of garden.
Home Orchards: Planted with a second variety nearby, fruit set improves and the harvest is worth curing.
Driveway Rows: Repeated along a drive it gives evergreen structure with almost no irrigation.
Dry Coastal Gardens: Salt laden wind and sandy soil suit it better than they suit most shade trees.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding both hard frost and peak summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of almost any type including alkaline, rocky and sandy ground; wet feet are the main cause of failure
Establishment Care: Water deeply every week or two through the first two summers to build a root system, then reduce to occasional deep soakings. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark kept away from the trunk, and avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which produces soft growth at the expense of fruit.
