Paragon Olive - Olea europaea ‘Paragon’
‘Paragon’ is a long grown Australian olive variety with a reputation for reliability across a wide range of conditions, producing fruit used for both curing and oil. As a landscape plant Olea europaea gives you an evergreen tree that survives on almost no water, holds a silver grey canopy through the worst of an Australian summer, and improves in appearance every decade as the trunk gnarls and thickens. It is chosen over other evergreens where the site is hot, exposed, alkaline or simply beyond the reach of irrigation.
Why Paragon Olive
Broad Adaptability: It performs across varied Australian districts rather than needing one narrow set of conditions.
Dual Purpose Crop: The fruit is used both for curing and for oil, so the harvest is not wasted either way.
Silver Foliage: Grey green leaves with pale undersides move constantly in wind and lighten heavy planting schemes.
Heat and Drought Endurance: Extended dry heat that browns most evergreens leaves an established olive unmarked.
Pruning Tolerance: It responds well to shaping, whether opened into a vase form or clipped into a hedge.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Feature Tree in Gravel Gardens: The silver canopy and dark trunk suit dry gardens built around stone and gravel.
Boundary Rows: Repeated planting along a fence gives evergreen screening with negligible water use.
Small Home Groves: Three or five trees on a rural block supply enough fruit for household curing.
Hot Exposed Sites: West facing frontages and windy ridges where other evergreens fail.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding heavy frost periods while young
Soil & Drainage: Any free draining soil including poor, rocky and alkaline ground; heavy waterlogged clay must be mounded
Establishment Care: Give a deep soak weekly through the first summer and fortnightly through the second, then step back entirely in most seasons. Keep a mulched, weed free circle around the base and hold off nitrogen rich feeding, which pushes soft growth and reduces fruiting.
