Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pendolino Olive - Olea europaea ‘Pendolino’
‘Pendolino’ takes its name from its pendulous habit: slender branches that arch and hang, giving the tree a distinctly weeping outline that sets it apart from the stiffer commercial olives. Olea europaea ‘Pendolino’ is grown across Australian groves less for its own crop of small fruit and more for its value as a near-universal pollinator, since it flowers abundantly and is compatible with most other varieties. In the garden that same weeping frame makes it the most ornamental of the common olives.
Why Pendolino Olive
Weeping form: Long, fine, arching branches create a soft, cascading canopy unusual in olives.
Universal pollinator: Flowers heavily and pollinates a wide range of olive varieties, including the self-sterile ones.
Ornamental value: The habit and fine silver foliage make it a legitimate feature tree, not just a grove workhorse.
Fine oil: Small fruit produces a delicate, fruity oil, though yields are lower than the dedicated oil varieties.
Drought hardiness: Once established it needs little more than natural rainfall across southern Australia.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Grove pollinator: Planted at intervals through a grove to lift fruit set in Leccino and other self-sterile varieties.
Ornamental specimen: Set on a lawn or in a gravel courtyard where the weeping canopy is the point.
Poolside and terrace planting: Its soft form and low water need suit dry paved areas.
Mediterranean garden: Combined with rosemary, lavender and gravel mulch in a low water planting scheme.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring across southern Australia
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soils of low to moderate fertility, tolerant of rocky and alkaline ground. Waterlogging is the one condition it will not survive
Establishment Care: Water deeply weekly for the first two summers, then only during extended dry periods. Mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, remove suckers from the base, and prune only lightly, since heavy pruning spoils the weeping outline that gives this variety its character.
