Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Olive (Topiary Standard) - Olea europaea
Trained as a clipped ball on a clear single trunk, the olive becomes one of the most useful formal plants available for hot, dry, exposed Australian positions. Olea europaea brings silver grey foliage, a gnarled trunk that gains character every year, and a tolerance of drought, wind, salt and alkaline soil that no clipped box or bay can match. It is chosen where a formal lollipop is wanted but the site is too harsh for a conventional topiary subject.
Why Topiary Olive
Silver Foliage: The grey green canopy sits beautifully against render, limestone, bluestone and weathered timber.
Extreme Drought Hardiness: Established plants hold form through long dry spells with minimal irrigation.
Salt and Wind Tolerance: Performs in coastal and exposed positions that scorch most clipped shrubs.
Clips Cleanly: Dense reshooting from old wood means the ball tightens with each trim rather than going bare.
Character Trunk: The stem thickens and furrows over time, so the plant looks older and better each year.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Entry Pair: Two matched standards either side of a door or gateway give immediate formality.
Large Feature Pots: One of the few topiary subjects that genuinely thrives long term in containers.
Driveway Repetition: A row of clipped heads along a drive delivers a Mediterranean avenue effect at low scale.
Courtyard and Terrace Structure: Provides evergreen geometry in hot paved spaces with reflected heat.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening form. In a continuous formal row allow 1.5 to 2m.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3.5m as separated standards
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring; avoid planting into cold waterlogged winter soil
Soil & Drainage: Free draining above all else. Tolerates poor, rocky and alkaline soils, but rots in heavy wet clay, so raise the planting position if drainage is doubtful.
Establishment Care: Water deeply but infrequently through the first two summers to encourage deep rooting, then reduce sharply. Mulch clear of the trunk, clip the head twice a year in spring and late summer to hold shape, and rub off any shoots that appear on the clear stem or at the base.
