Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Assorted Broadleaf Rhododendron - Rhododendron spp.
The broadleaf rhododendrons are the cool-climate shrub that no other genus quite replaces: thick leathery evergreen leaves year round, then trusses of large bell flowers massed over the whole plant in spring. This is an assorted selection, so flower colour will vary across white, pink, mauve, red and apricot depending on what is available. They are shallow-rooted woodland plants at heart, and getting the soil acidity, drainage and shade right matters far more than anything you do afterwards.
Why Rhododendron
Truss flowering: Flowers are carried in domed trusses of a dozen or more, so the display reads as solid colour rather than scattered blooms.
Year-round foliage: Broad glossy leaves hold through winter and give the shrub presence in every season.
Shade performance: Genuinely flowers well in dappled light where most flowering shrubs go thin and leggy.
Frost hardiness: Well suited to the tablelands, Adelaide Hills, Victorian ranges and Tasmania.
Longevity: Given the right soil they live for decades and improve steadily with age.
Toxicity warning: All parts are toxic to people, dogs, cats and horses if eaten.
Ideal Applications
Woodland and understorey beds: Planted beneath high-canopy deciduous trees where light is filtered.
South-facing borders: Thrives in cool aspects that defeat sun-loving shrubs.
Informal flowering hedges: A staggered row makes a soft two metre boundary in cool districts.
Cool-climate courtyards: Works in raised beds of purpose-made acidic mix where garden soil is unsuitable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, avoiding both hard frost and summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Acidic soil around pH 4.5 to 6, high in organic matter, moist but freely drained; plant shallow, with the top of the root ball at or slightly above grade
Establishment Care: Water with rainwater or low-alkalinity water through the first two summers and never let the root ball dry right out, as the fine surface roots have no reserve. Mulch with 75mm of pine bark or leaf litter and never dig or cultivate around the base.
