Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Assorted Rhododendron - Rhododendron spp.
Supplied as a mixed selection, so the flower colour will vary from plant to plant across white, pink, mauve and red. What all Rhododendron share is a set of non negotiable cultural requirements: acidic soil, a cool root run, constant organic matter and dappled light. Get those right and these are hundred year plants that flower more generously every spring; get them wrong and no amount of feeding will save them.
Why Rhododendron
Massed Spring Trusses: Flowers come in large rounded heads rather than singly, so one plant carries a substantial display.
Genuine Shade Performance: Few large flowering shrubs bloom this heavily in dappled light under established trees.
Bold Evergreen Leaves: Thick leathery foliage holds structure and colour through winter when the garden is bare.
Shallow Fibrous Roots: Rhododendrons root close to the surface, which makes them easy to transplant and easy to mulch.
Longevity: Well sited plants improve steadily for decades and become the framework of a cool climate garden.
Toxicity warning: All parts are toxic to people, dogs, cats and horses if eaten.
Ideal Applications
Woodland Garden: Planted beneath deciduous canopy where winter sun reaches them and summer shade protects them.
Cool Climate Screen: A row of the taller kinds gives an informal evergreen boundary that flowers.
Shaded Courtyard Beds: Brings colour to the south side of a house where most flowering shrubs sulk.
Large Tubs: A generous pot of acidic mix suits gardens where the native soil is alkaline or heavy.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic at pH 4.5 to 6, very high in organic matter, moist yet freely drained; never plant into limey or waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Set the top of the root ball level with the surface or very slightly proud, because planting a rhododendron too deep is the most common way they are lost. Mulch to 75mm with leaf litter or pine bark, water with rainwater where the tap supply is hard, never cultivate around the roots, and deadhead spent trusses by snapping them out just above the new growth buds.
