Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cabbage Palmetto - Sabal palmetto
Sabal palmetto is a heavy, solid palm: a thick columnar trunk topped by a dense globe of costapalmate fronds that arch and fold along a curved midrib. It is one of the toughest palms in cultivation, handling cold, wind, salt and periodic wet ground that would finish most tropical palms, which is why it is planted so widely on exposed coastal and civic sites. The trade-off is patience, because it establishes and grows slowly for the first several years before it starts putting on trunk.
Why Cabbage Palmetto
Cold hardiness: Among the most frost tolerant of the trunking fan palms, well suited to cooler coastal and inland southern gardens.
Salt and wind resistance: Handles front-line coastal exposure, including salt spray and constant onshore wind.
Stout trunk: The heavy 30 to 45cm trunk gives visual weight that slender palms cannot match.
Costapalmate crown: Fronds curve and fold rather than sitting flat, creating a full rounded head with real depth.
Wet-soil tolerance: Copes with periodically damp ground better than most palms, useful on low-lying blocks.
Ideal Applications
Coastal driveways and entries: Its bulk and salt tolerance suit exposed front-of-property positions.
Formal avenue planting: Uniform trunk and crown make evenly spaced rows read cleanly.
Poolside and resort landscaping: Delivers a substantial palm silhouette without heavy litter.
Civic and streetscape planting: Long used where durability under neglect matters more than speed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a dense palm grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m for an even avenue
Best Planting Season: Late spring and summer, when soil is warm and root activity is strongest
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across sand, loam and clay; prefers free drainage but tolerates occasional inundation
Establishment Care: Water regularly and consistently for the first two years, since this species is notoriously slow to push new roots after transplanting. Keep fronds tied up for the first few months if the site is windy, and mulch generously without piling material against the trunk.
