Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Grass Tree (Triple) - Xanthorrhoea johnsonii
A triple carries three separate crowns from one root mass, so instead of a single fountain of leaves you get an asymmetric, multi headed silhouette that looks like a naturally occurring group. Xanthorrhoea johnsonii is a Queensland and northern New South Wales species that grows at a pace measured in centimetres of trunk per year, which is why an established plant has real presence and real age behind it. It asks for sun, sand and almost no attention, and it actively dislikes rich soil.
Why a Triple Grass Tree
Three Crowns: Multiple heads give depth and irregularity that a single crown plant cannot match.
Measured Growth: Trunk extension is roughly one to two centimetres a year, so the form you install is essentially the form you keep.
Fire Adapted Biology: The species evolved with fire, resprouting from a protected growing point and often flowering strongly afterwards.
Drought Endurance: Once settled it survives on rainfall through long dry spells that flatten conventional planting.
Living Skirt: The mass of fine leaves cascades and rustles, giving movement in a planting scheme built from hard materials.
Ideal Applications
Native gravel garden centrepiece: It is the obvious anchor among kangaroo grass, banksia and westringia.
Dry sunny slope: Sharp drainage on a bank is close to its natural situation.
Contemporary courtyard: The sculptural form suits concrete, corten and crushed rock better than a lawn setting.
Exposed inland and coastal sites: It tolerates heat, wind and poor soil where most feature plants fail.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 3m centres if grouped in a run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gravelly soil with very sharp drainage and low fertility. Never plant into rich compost or manure, and never allow water to sit around the base.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer only, then wean the plant off supplementary water entirely. Use a low phosphorus native fertiliser or none at all, mulch with gravel rather than organic material, and avoid disturbing the roots or burying the crown at any stage.
