Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Zanzibar Gem - Zamioculcas zamiifolia
The Zanzibar gem survives conditions that kill almost every other indoor plant, and the reason is underground: Zamioculcas zamiifolia stores water in thick potato like rhizomes, so it can go weeks without watering and still look immaculate. Above ground it produces stiff, upright, arching fronds of thick, waxy, dark green leaflets that reflect light like polished plastic. In a specimen sized pot it becomes an architectural floor plant for offices, entries and interior corners with very little natural light.
Why Zanzibar Gem
Drought Storage: Water storing rhizomes let it tolerate long gaps between waterings and periods of neglect.
Low Light Tolerance: It holds condition in interiors where light levels are too low for most foliage plants.
Leaf Finish: The leaflets are thick and naturally glossy, so the plant looks polished without leaf shine products.
Upright Form: Fronds arch out from the base into a clean vase shape that suits narrow interior spaces.
Pest Resistance: The tough waxy foliage is rarely troubled by the mites and scale that attack softer indoor plants.
Ideal Applications
Interior floor specimen: A large pot in a lobby, hallway or living room corner away from direct sun.
Low light office planting: Performs under artificial light where most plants decline within months.
Sheltered covered outdoor areas: Suits shaded verandahs and atriums in frost free subtropical and tropical climates.
Grouped interior mass: Several pots together form a low green screen inside a room.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant; group pots at 0.6 to 0.8m centres for an interior mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.2m centres when planted in a sheltered outdoor bed
Best Planting Season: Any time indoors; spring or summer for potting on or outdoor planting in warm zones
Soil & Drainage: Free draining potting mix with added perlite or coarse sand; the pot must drain freely and never sit in water
Establishment Care: Water only when the top third of the mix is dry, roughly every two to four weeks depending on season and light. Wipe the leaflets occasionally to keep them glossy, feed lightly twice in the warm months, and note that the sap can irritate skin and the plant is toxic if eaten, so keep it away from pets and small children.
