Overview & Specifications

Variegated Century Plant - Agave americana ‘Marginata’
Nothing else gives the same scale of sculptural presence for as little water as a mature Agave americana ‘Marginata’, whose grey green sword leaves are edged in broad creamy yellow bands. The rosette is enormous by succulent standards, arching outward and upward to well over two metres across, and it reads as a single deliberate object rather than a plant in a bed. It is a commitment though: the leaf tips carry a hard spine, so placement away from paths and play areas matters.
Why Variegated Century Plant
Yellow margined leaves: Broad creamy yellow edges on grey green leaves make it far more visible than the plain species.
Architectural scale: A mature rosette is a genuine landscape feature, holding its own against buildings and large paved areas.
Zero irrigation: Once rooted it needs no supplementary water anywhere in southern or inland Australia.
Coastal proof: Salt wind, sand and reflected heat cause it no trouble at all.
Dramatic finale: After many years the rosette sends up a flower mast of several metres, then dies leaving established offsets behind.
Siting note: This species has naturalised in parts of southern Australia, so avoid planting adjacent to bushland reserves and remove pups as they appear.
Ideal Applications
Solo sculptural feature: Placed in gravel or decomposed granite as the single focal point of a dry courtyard.
Hot exposed frontage: Fills a west facing strip that bakes and where nothing else survives without irrigation.
Coastal dune style planting: Combines with grasses, aloes and westringia in a beachside garden.
Security barrier: The rigid spine tipped leaves form an effective deterrent along a rear or side boundary.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a barrier planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m, keeping leaf tips at least 1m clear of any path
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn while soil is warm and dry
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential; sandy, gravelly or rocky soil, raised or mounded on clay sites
Establishment Care: Water monthly for the first three months to settle the roots, then stop entirely, since summer irrigation is the main cause of rot. Mulch with gravel only, keep organic matter away from the base, and consider trimming the hard terminal spine on leaves that sit near a walkway.
