Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mediopicta Alba Century Plant - Agave americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’
The most striking of the century plant selections, Agave americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ carries a broad creamy white band down the centre of each blue-grey leaf, so the whole rosette appears lit from within. It is also considerably more restrained than the plain species, forming a rosette of roughly a metre rather than sprawling to two and a half, which is what makes it usable in a designed garden rather than only on a roadside.
Why Mediopicta Alba Century Plant
Central white variegation: A wide ivory stripe runs the length of every leaf, unlike edge-variegated agaves.
Controlled size: Noticeably smaller than the straight species, which keeps it in proportion in courtyards and beds.
Strong recurve: Leaves arch outward and back, creating a full, open rosette that reads well from any angle.
Water independence: Once established it survives on rainfall through the harshest Australian summers.
Offsets: It produces pups around the base, so a single plant slowly becomes a colony if you let it.
Siting note: This species has naturalised in parts of southern Australia, so avoid planting adjacent to bushland reserves and remove pups as they appear.
Handle with care: Every leaf ends in a hard terminal spine and carries hooked teeth along both margins. Site it clear of paths, play areas and pool edges, and wear gloves and eye protection when handling or trimming.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard focal plant: A single rosette in gravel or crushed rock against a dark or rendered wall.
Coastal dry gardens: Salt wind, sand and reflected heat are all within its comfortable range.
Raised planters: Excellent in elevated beds where drainage is guaranteed and the rosette is at eye level.
Low-water median and verge planting: Used in commercial schemes where irrigation is unavailable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; for a dense barrier plant at 1 to 1.2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.8 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, into warm dry soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is the single requirement. Sandy, gravelly or mounded soil, with no drip line or spray irrigation aimed at the crown.
Establishment Care: Water lightly once a fortnight for the first two months, then leave it to rainfall. Mulch with gravel rather than organic material, and site it back from paths, driveways and play areas because the terminal spines are extremely sharp and the sap irritates skin.
