Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Century Plant - Agave americana
Few plants hold a shape as absolutely as this one. Agave americana builds a wide open rosette of thick, chalky grey blue leaves with a powdery white bloom on the surface, each leaf arching out and up and finishing in a hard point. It is grown in Australia less as a curiosity than as a working landscape plant: it takes coastal salt, reflected heat off paving, thin soil and long dry spells, and it looks exactly the same in February as it does in July.
Why White Century Plant
Leaf Colour: Pale grey blue with a waxy white surface bloom that lifts a dark planting bed or a shaded courtyard wall.
Drought Endurance: Water is stored in the leaves, so mature plants go months without rain and show no stress.
Coastal Hardiness: Salt wind and sandy soil suit it, and it is a long standing feature of exposed Australian coastal gardens.
Zero Seasonal Work: No pruning, no feeding and no deadheading. Old lower leaves are simply cut off at the base every few years.
Handling Safety: The leaf tips are genuinely sharp and each leaf carries a terminal spine with hooked teeth along both margins, so keep it back from paths, seating, play areas and pool edges, or trim the terminal spines where people pass close. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling or trimming.
Siting note: This species has naturalised in parts of southern Australia, so avoid planting adjacent to bushland reserves and remove pups as they appear.
Ideal Applications
Coastal and Dune Style Planting: Reads correctly alongside coastal rosemary, westringia and native grasses.
Median and Roundabout Planting: Survives unirrigated civic conditions that kill almost everything ornamental.
Rockery Anchor: The scale it brings to a rock and gravel garden cannot be matched by a shrub.
Courtyard Sculpture: A single plant in a wide low bowl against a rendered wall works as a piece of built form.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not used as a hedge. As a barrier row, 2 to 2.5m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m, allowing for the full mature spread.
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn.
Soil & Drainage: Coarse, gritty and fast draining. On clay it must be raised or mounded, and winter wet is the one thing that will kill it.
Establishment Care: A single deep watering at planting and one more a month later through the first warm season is sufficient. Dress the surface with gravel rather than bark, and never let mulch or soil bank up against the crown.
