Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Frosty Blue Whale’s Tongue Agave - Agave ovatifolia ‘Frosty Blue’
The whale's tongue agave is the one that architects specify: a single, symmetrical rosette of broad, deeply cupped leaves in powder blue, built with a geometry so regular it looks manufactured. Agave ovatifolia differs from the more familiar century plant in two ways that matter on site: it stays solitary instead of throwing pups everywhere, and it is among the most cold hardy of all agaves. ‘Frosty Blue’ is selected for particularly strong silver blue leaf colour.
Why Frosty Blue Agave
Solitary Habit: It rarely suckers, so the sculptural single rosette stays clean instead of becoming a colony to manage.
Cupped Blue Leaves: Wide leaves curl upward into a bowl shape that holds shadow and catches light through the day.
Genuine Cold Hardiness: It handles frost well below zero, which extends its use far beyond warm coastal gardens.
Very Low Water: Once established it survives on rainfall in most southern Australian districts.
Flowers Once: Like all agaves it is monocarpic, sending up a tall flower spike after many years and then dying, so it should be planted as a long term but not permanent feature.
Ideal Applications
Architectural Focal Point: A single rosette in gravel or against render carries a whole courtyard composition.
Dry and Gravel Gardens: Anchors low water plantings with succulents, grasses and Mediterranean shrubs.
Large Containers: Sharp drainage in a pot suits it, and raising it lifts the geometry to eye level.
Coastal and Exposed Sites: Wind, salt, heat and reflected light are all handled without damage.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; mass plantings at 1.2m to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m or more as a standalone specimen
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, avoiding cold wet soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential; gravelly, sandy or raised beds, never heavy clay that holds winter moisture
Establishment Care: Water occasionally through the first summer to settle the roots, then leave it largely alone, as overwatering in humid weather causes crown rot. Mulch with gravel rather than organic matter to keep the base dry, and set the plant back at least a metre from paths and play areas because the leaf tips and marginal teeth are genuinely sharp.
