Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weber’s Agave - Agave weberi
Among the large agaves, Agave weberi is the civilised one. Its long grey green leaves arch outward in a broad open rosette with smooth, essentially unarmed margins, so it can be planted where a spiny americana would be a liability. It still finishes in a hard terminal point, but the difference in handling is substantial. The clean architectural form and near total independence from irrigation make it a staple of modern low water landscapes.
Why Weber’s Agave
Smooth Leaf Margins: Unlike most large agaves the leaf edges carry no hooked teeth, which makes it far safer beside paths and seating.
Broad Open Rosette: Leaves arch rather than stand rigid, giving a softer, more fountain-like silhouette.
Grey Green Colour: A cool matte tone that sits well against rendered walls, corten steel and pale gravel.
Cold and Dry Tolerance: It handles frost better than most large agaves and needs virtually no summer water once established.
Offsets Freely: Pups form around the base, so the planting renews itself and spare plants are always available.
Ideal Applications
Architectural Bed: A single rosette in gravel against a plain wall does the work of an entire border.
Driveway and Verge: Tough enough for hot reflected positions with no irrigation and little maintenance.
Exposed Coastal Garden: Handles salt laden wind and sharp sandy soil without browning.
Large Pot Feature: Suits a wide shallow container where the full rosette shape can be appreciated.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m when mass planted
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil; poor fertility is no obstacle, but heavy wet clay causes crown and root rot
Establishment Care: Water monthly through the first summer to settle the roots, then stop almost entirely, since established plants are damaged more by irrigation than by drought. Allow for the mature spread of well over two metres at planting time, keep the terminal spines clear of walkways, and note that after many years the plant sends up a tall flowering panicle, sets seed and dies, leaving its offsets to carry on.
