Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Aloe ‘Capricorn’
Hybrid aloes have quietly taken over the low water Australian garden, and this is one of the reasons why. Aloe ‘Capricorn’ forms a tight, upright rosette of thick, toothed, blue-green leaves that clumps steadily outward, then throws branched spikes of warm orange to coral flowers well clear of the foliage through the cooler months. It gives a structural, almost architectural shape in a bed that gets no irrigation, and it flowers when the rest of the garden has shut down for winter.
Why Aloe ‘Capricorn’
Sculptural Rosette: Broad, upswept leaves form a strong geometric shape that holds interest with or without flowers.
Winter Flowering: Spikes of orange to coral tubular flowers rise above the foliage in the cool season, feeding honeyeaters.
Clumping Habit: It offsets steadily to form a mass rather than staying a lone rosette, which suits drift planting.
Minimal Water: Fully established plants need no summer irrigation in most Australian climates.
Drainage Critical: The one thing it will not tolerate is wet soil, particularly in humid summers, so plant high and drain well.
Ideal Applications
Gravel and Dry Gardens: Massed through crushed rock with grasses and other succulents.
Poolside Beds: Handles reflected heat and splash, and drops almost no litter into water.
Exposed Coastal Planting: Wind and salt-tolerant enough for front-line seaside beds.
Large Containers: A confined, gritty potting mix gives it exactly the drainage it prefers.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a closed mass planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.2m where each rosette is to stand alone
Best Planting Season: Spring through to autumn; avoid planting into cold wet soil in mid winter
Soil & Drainage: Gritty, sharply drained sandy or rocky soil; raise beds or mound on clay sites
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly for the first few months only, and never leave the crown sitting in moisture. Mulch with gravel rather than organic material to keep the base dry and reduce rot risk, and withhold water entirely during wet humid spells.
