Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Aloe ‘Outback Orange’
Bred as a landscape aloe rather than a collector's plant, ‘Outback Orange’ forms a tidy clumping rosette of fleshy grey-green leaves and sends up orange tubular flower spikes over a long season, with the heaviest display through the cooler months. It is compact and uniform enough for mass planting, which is the main reason it is specified in commercial and streetscape work in Australia. Nectar-feeding birds work the spikes, and once established it needs essentially no supplementary water in most temperate gardens.
Why Outback Orange
Long Flowering: Orange spikes appear over an extended season, with the strongest flush from autumn into spring when little else is out.
Uniform Habit: A consistent, compact clumping form that mass plants evenly rather than in scattered sizes.
Bird Attracting: Tubular flowers are a dependable winter nectar source for honeyeaters.
Water Efficiency: Succulent leaves store enough moisture to carry the plant through long dry spells unwatered.
Toughness: Handles heat, reflected glare from paving and coastal exposure with little maintenance.
Ideal Applications
Mass Planting: Blocks and drifts in median strips, roundabouts and low-maintenance commercial beds.
Dry Garden Border: Repeated through a gravel or Mediterranean border with grasses and succulents.
Coastal Bed: Withstands salt-laden wind and sandy soil in exposed seaside gardens.
Container Colour: Grows well in pots on hot terraces where irrigation is unreliable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.5 to 0.7m for a solid mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 0.8 to 1m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soil is essential; heavy clay and irrigated garden beds cause crown and root rot
Establishment Care: Water every ten days or so for the first two months to settle the roots, then leave it to rainfall except in severe drought. Use a gravel mulch to keep the base dry, and cut spent flower spikes off at the base to tidy the clump and encourage the next flush.
