Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Aloe ‘Rias’
Hybrid aloes like this one exist because the wild species, for all their toughness, tend to flower briefly and sit awkwardly in a garden bed. Aloe ‘Rias’ is grown as a landscape succulent: fleshy toothed leaves in a firm rosette, a clumping habit that fills space over a few seasons, and flower stems held above the foliage in the cooler half of the year. It goes where irrigation does not reach and where soil is thin, poor or full of rubble.
Why Aloe ‘Rias’
Structural Rosette: Thick, upcurved leaves give solid form in a bed all year, not just in flower.
Winter Interest: Flower stems rise in the cool season, when succulent gardens usually go quiet.
Spreads Slowly: It clumps outward at a manageable rate, closing gaps without becoming invasive.
Heat and Reflection: Untroubled by hot paving, rendered walls and full northern exposure.
Minimal Upkeep: Aside from removing spent flower stems there is essentially nothing to do.
Ideal Applications
Waterwise Bed: Blocks of a single aloe read far better than a mixed succulent jumble.
Rock and Gravel Garden: Slots between boulders where soil depth is shallow.
Coastal Frontage: Tolerates salt wind and sandy soil in exposed coastal gardens.
Container Grouping: Holds shape in a pot for years with almost no attention.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not used for screening. In mass plantings allow 0.7 to 1m between plants.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m as spaced accents.
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn, while the soil is warm and drying quickly.
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage above all else. Sandy loam, gritty succulent mix or a raised bed on clay soils.
Establishment Care: Give a deep soak at planting and then water only every two to three weeks over the first summer. Mulch with scoria or gravel, keep it out of the crown, and avoid any fertiliser beyond a light slow-release feed in spring.
