Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mollis Azalea - Rhododendron molle
Mollis azaleas are deciduous, and that changes how they are used. Rhododendron molle drops its leaves in autumn after they turn bronze and orange, then flowers in spring on bare or barely leafed stems, carrying trusses of wide open blooms in yellow, apricot, salmon and flame that run far hotter in colour than any evergreen azalea. It is a cool climate shrub that needs winter chill, acid soil and shelter from hard afternoon sun.
Why Mollis Azalea
Deciduous habit: Bare winter stems let light into the bed and give a completely different structure to evergreen azaleas.
Hot flower colours: Yellows, apricots and flame oranges are unavailable in the evergreen types.
Autumn foliage: Leaves colour bronze, orange and red before dropping, giving a second season of interest.
Light fragrance: Flowers carry a soft honeysuckle scent on warm spring days.
Compact scale: It stays around 1.5m, so it fits the middle layer of a shrub border without crowding.
Ideal Applications
Cool climate shrub border: Sits in the middle layer with hydrangeas, hellebores and Japanese maples.
Woodland edge: Dappled light under high branched trees is close to its natural growing conditions.
Massed under deciduous canopy: A drift of one colour reads strongly through a bare spring canopy.
Acid mix containers: Grows well in a large pot of ericaceous mix where garden soil is alkaline.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Acid soil around pH 5 to 6, humus rich and free draining but never allowed to dry out; lime and alkaline water cause yellowing
Establishment Care: Keep the shallow surface roots evenly moist through the first two summers and mulch 75mm with pine bark or leaf litter, never digging or cultivating around the base. All parts of this plant are toxic if eaten, so site it away from grazing animals and areas used by very young children.
