Crested Fishbone Water Fern - Blechnum nudum ‘Crested’
The straight species is one of the most useful ferns in Australian shade planting; this selection takes it further by ending every frond in a forked, tasselled crest. Blechnum nudum ‘Crested’ builds a full shuttlecock crown of pale to mid green fronds that becomes a short, dark, fibrous trunk with age, so an established plant reads as a miniature tree fern rather than a clump at ground level.
Why Crested Fishbone Water Fern
Crested Frond Tips: Each frond finishes in a divided, fringed tassel, adding texture that reads clearly even from several metres away.
Trunk Formation: Older plants raise the crown on a short black fibrous stem, lifting the fronds off the ground and creating layered depth in a fern bed.
Vertical Shuttlecock Form: Fronds rise steeply before arching, so it occupies vertical space without spreading sideways into paths.
Cold Tolerance: Hardy through frost prone sheltered gardens across the southern states, well beyond the range of tropical ferns.
Pink New Growth: Croziers unfurl with a soft pink to bronze flush against the established green.
Ideal Applications
Layered Fern Gullies: It bridges the gap between low ground ferns and tall tree ferns, giving the middle storey in a shaded gully scheme.
Feature Pots in Shade: A single plant in a wide glazed pot suits a shaded entry, atrium or covered courtyard.
Damp Shaded Borders: Massed under established canopy where soil stays cool and moist year round.
Water Feature Surrounds: The crested fronds catch light well beside still water and in the humidity around a pond or wall fountain.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a closed drift
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m so each crown keeps its shuttlecock shape
Best Planting Season: Autumn through spring, avoiding the peak of summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, acidic, permanently moist soil with free drainage; add composted organic matter generously to clay or sand
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first summer and mist the crown in dry heat, as this fern browns quickly once the root zone dries. Mulch with fine leaf litter, keep it out of hot afternoon sun and drying wind, and remove old fronds at the base in late winter.
