Crimson Bottlebrush - Callistemon citrinus
Callistemon citrinus is the species behind most of the bottlebrushes in Australian gardens, and the straight form is still one of the toughest flowering shrubs you can plant. It carries dense crimson brushes in a heavy spring flush with a reliable second showing in autumn, on a spreading shrub with narrow leaves that smell of lemon when crushed. What sets it apart from most flowering shrubs is its tolerance of both waterlogged ground and extended dry, which lets it be used on sites that defeat other plants.
Why Crimson Bottlebrush
Twice Yearly Flowering: A strong spring flush followed by a lighter autumn repeat, rather than a single brief display.
Wet and Dry Tolerance: It grows naturally along creek lines and copes with periodic flooding, yet handles drought once established.
Nectar Source: Brushes are heavily worked by honeyeaters, lorikeets and native bees.
Frost Hardy: Withstands the frosts of most temperate and tableland Australian districts without damage.
Responds to Pruning: Cutting behind the spent brushes each year keeps it dense to the base instead of woody and open.
Ideal Applications
Informal Screen: A row planted close together gives a dense, flowering boundary within a few seasons.
Creek and Swale Planting: Suited to low lying ground and drainage lines that hold water after rain.
Habitat Garden: A dependable nectar source that anchors a bird attracting native planting.
Low Maintenance Verge: Handles reflected heat, poor soil and no irrigation on a nature strip or median.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring in temperate districts
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from clay to sand, acidic to neutral. It accepts poorly drained ground that most shrubs reject, though it grows faster where drainage is good
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then reduce as the plant becomes largely self sufficient. Mulch to 75mm kept clear of the stem, feed with a low phosphorus native fertiliser after flowering if growth is weak, and prune immediately after each flush by cutting just behind the spent brushes, which is what keeps the plant compact and drives the next round of flowering wood.
