Bhutan Cypress (Standard) - Cupressus torulosa
Grown as a standard, this Cupressus torulosa has been trained to a single clear stem with a clipped rounded head of soft, fine, aromatic green foliage. The species is the workhorse screening conifer of Australian gardens because it tolerates heat, dry inland summers and poor alkaline soil while still holding a dense clipped surface, and those same qualities make it a durable standard where a lollipop bay or buxus would struggle. The result is a piece of instant formal structure: a clean trunk, a defined ball, and the same silhouette in every season.
Why the Bhutan Cypress Standard
Trained Shape: A clear straight stem and an even clipped head, already established over several seasons in the nursery.
Foliage Quality: Fine soft green sprays that take a clip cleanly and knit back into a solid surface within weeks.
Climate Range: Handles hot dry summers, frost and alkaline soils, which covers most of inland and southern Australia.
Underplanting Freedom: The clear trunk leaves the ground beneath open for a low hedge, ground cover or paving.
Maintenance Rhythm: Two clips a year holds the shape, and both are quick because the head is small and at reachable height.
Ideal Applications
Entrance Pair: A matched pair flanking a door, gate or driveway entry.
Formal Driveway Rhythm: Repeated at even spacing to give a drive a deliberate architectural cadence.
Statement Pots: Sits well in a substantial square planter against rendered or stone walls.
Layered Formal Bed: Planted through a low clipped hedge so the heads float above the hedge line.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m where a run of heads is wanted to read as a continuous line.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m so each head is read separately.
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding the extremes of summer heat and midwinter wet.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, including poor, stony and alkaline soils. Waterlogging is fatal.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, then weekly until the second season. Keep the stem staked until the head is heavy enough to hold itself steady, mulch clear of the trunk, and clip only in dry weather because pruning wounds made in wet conditions invite cypress canker.
