Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cyathea robusta
As the name suggests, Cyathea robusta is a heavy set tree fern rather than a slender one, building a thick fibrous trunk beneath a broad crown of long arching fronds. It is an island endemic, found in the mountain forests of Lord Howe Island, and that origin explains its needs precisely: permanently humid air, reliable rainfall, deep shade and shelter from wind. Where those conditions exist it is one of the most substantial tree ferns available, holding a much bulkier presence than the common garden species.
Why Cyathea robusta
Heavy trunk: A thick fibrous stem gives the plant far more visual weight than the slender Australian mainland species.
Broad crown: Long arching fronds spread widely, covering a large area of ground with dense shade.
Island endemic: Restricted in the wild to Lord Howe Island, which makes it a genuinely uncommon garden subject.
Humid climate performance: It thrives in the humid coastal conditions that stress many cool climate tree ferns.
Epiphyte host: The fibrous trunk supports mosses, orchids and small ferns over time, adding a second layer of interest.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest garden anchor: A single mature plant establishes the middle canopy layer of a shaded garden on its own.
Shaded courtyard: In a still, humid space between buildings it gets the sheltered conditions it requires.
Water feature surround: Planted beside a pond or cascade the added humidity keeps frond condition high.
Understorey beneath palms: Sited under established palms it occupies the shaded ground they create.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. Allow 2 to 2.5m between plants in a grove given the broad crown
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 3.5m to display the trunk and full frond spread
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, in mild moist conditions
Soil & Drainage: Deep, permanently moist, humus rich soil with free drainage. Humid air and wind shelter matter as much as soil
Establishment Care: Water the crown and trunk daily in hot weather through the first summer and at least three times a week otherwise, keeping the fibrous stem damp at all times. Mulch thickly with leaf litter, avoid any position exposed to hot dry wind or afternoon sun, and remove old fronds only once fully brown so the crown is never left unprotected.
