Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Australian Nut Palm - Cycas media
One of Australia's own cycads, Cycas media grows through the open woodland and savannah of Queensland and the Northern Territory, where it survives fire, drought and poor soil and still throws a clean flush of arching fronds each year. It is not a palm despite the common name, and its value in a designed landscape is the hard, symmetrical crown of glossy fronds sitting on a stout dark trunk. Landscape architects specify it where a Cycas revoluta would look too neat and too Japanese for a native or dry-tropical scheme.
Why the Australian Nut Palm
Local Provenance: A genuine Australian species suited to native and bush-inspired planting schemes.
Fire and Drought Hardiness: Evolved in fire-prone savannah, so it shrugs off heat and long dry spells.
Annual Flush: Produces a single coordinated set of new fronds, giving a clear seasonal moment.
Trunk Character: Develops a thick, textured trunk with age that lifts the crown to eye level.
Low Input: Needs almost no feeding, pruning or irrigation once the roots are down.
Toxicity warning: All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic to dogs and people if eaten, so consider placement in a pet household.
Ideal Applications
Native Feature Planting: Provides hard architectural form among grasses, banksias and grevilleas.
Dry Tropical Garden: Suits Darwin, Cairns and Townsville schemes where water is limited.
Poolside Sculpture: Clean, non-shedding habit that will not clog skimmers the way palms do.
Median and Verge Planting: Tough enough for exposed civic beds with minimal maintenance access.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5m to 3.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, while soil temperatures are high
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gravelly free-draining soil; will rot in heavy clay unless raised
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer and then leave it alone, as overwatering is the main cause of failure. Mulch with a coarse gravel or bark, keeping the trunk base exposed, and remove old fronds only once the new flush has fully hardened.
