Overview & Specifications

Mauritius Hemp - Furcraea foetida
At a distance Furcraea foetida reads like a giant agave without the danger: a rosette of long, sword shaped, bright green leaves up to two metres across, with soft margins instead of the vicious hooked spines of a true agave. It is used in dry gardens for architectural mass, where the leaf geometry does the work and irrigation does not. Give it drainage and sun and it will hold that shape for a decade or more.
Why Mauritius Hemp
Architectural Rosette: A single plant builds a symmetrical fountain of leaves that anchors a bed without any other planting.
Safer Margins: Leaf edges are largely smooth and there is no rigid terminal spike, so it is far more approachable than agave near paths.
Drought Endurance: Established plants survive extended dry periods with no supplementary water at all.
Monocarpic Cycle: After many years it throws a flowering spike several metres tall, then that rosette dies and is replaced by offsets around the base.
Bulbil Caution: Spent flower spikes carry plantlets that root readily where they fall, so remove the spike in warm coastal districts to stop it spreading beyond the bed.
Ideal Applications
Dry and gravel gardens: It sits naturally with agaves, aloes, yuccas and ornamental grasses on stony ground.
Exposed coastal banks: Salt wind and sand are no obstacle, and the root mass helps hold a slope.
Large pots and raised planters: Elevating the rosette shows the leaf arch to best effect and guarantees drainage.
Modern architectural beds: The strong repeated form works well against rendered walls, concrete and steel.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Massed at 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m clear of neighbouring plants
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sand, gravel or rocky ground; it rots in heavy wet clay and in any position where winter rain collects
Establishment Care: Water roughly once a month through the first summer and then leave it alone entirely. Keep mulch and soil well clear of the crown, since organic material packed against the base is the usual cause of collapse.
