Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Furcraea macdougallii
Most agave relatives sit on the ground. Furcraea macdougallii does not: it builds a slender grey trunk and lifts its rosette of stiff, toothed, grey green leaves several metres into the air, so the plant reads as a sculpture on a stem rather than a spiky clump. It is a Mexican highland species that wants sun, sharp drainage and very little else. Like the agaves it is monocarpic, flowering once at the end of a long life on an enormous branched spike before setting bulbils and dying.
Why MacDougall’s Furcraea
Trunk Forming Rosette: The rosette is carried on a distinct woody trunk, giving vertical drama that ground level succulents cannot.
Architectural Scale: Leaves reach well over a metre long, so a single plant holds a large courtyard on its own.
Drought Endurance: Once rooted it survives on rainfall alone across most of southern Australia.
Toothed Leaf Margins: Hooked spines along each leaf edge catch the light and make it a genuine barrier plant.
Once in a Lifetime Flowering: After many years it throws a towering branched spike of greenish white flowers, then produces plantlets and finishes.
Ideal Applications
Gravel and arid garden focal point: It anchors a dry garden of agaves, aloes and grasses with a change of height.
Exposed coastal position: Salt laden wind and poor sandy soil suit it better than a sheltered rich bed.
Modern architectural planting: Its clean silhouette suits rendered walls, board formed concrete and minimal planting palettes.
Raised bed or large trough: Elevating it improves drainage and lifts the rosette to eye level.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5m to 3m centres if repeated in a row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn while the soil is warm and drying
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is the only real requirement: sandy, gravelly or rocky soil, ideally on a slope or a raised bed. Winter wet in heavy clay is the one thing that reliably kills it.
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, perhaps fortnightly through the first summer, and stop altogether over winter. Use a gravel or coarse mineral mulch rather than organic material against the trunk, and set the plant at least a metre back from paths and play areas because the marginal teeth are sharp.
