Stockdale Sensation Pincushion Hakea - Hakea laurina ‘Stockdale Sensation’
The pincushion hakea flowers in the middle of autumn and winter, throwing crimson globes studded with cream styles that look engineered rather than grown. ‘Stockdale Sensation’ is a selected form of Hakea laurina chosen for heavier, more reliable flowering and a fuller, better furnished habit than typical seedlings. Long blue-green leaves and a rounded shrub outline give it presence even out of flower, and honeyeaters find it within days of the first buds opening.
Why Stockdale Sensation
Winter flowering: Blooms open from autumn into winter, filling the season when most native shrubs have shut down.
Flower structure: Each globe is a dense red sphere with radiating cream styles, striking enough to cut for a vase.
Denser habit: This selection furnishes lower and flowers more consistently than the run of seedling grown pincushion hakeas.
Nectar source: Wattlebirds, honeyeaters and native bees work the flowers heavily through the cold months.
Water thrift: Once rooted it needs no summer irrigation in most temperate Australian gardens.
Ideal Applications
Native screen: A row along a fence gives a three metre evergreen barrier with a long flowering season.
Bird garden anchor: Combined with banksias and correas it extends nectar supply right through winter.
Dry front garden: On unirrigated verges and gravel beds it performs where exotic shrubs need constant water.
Cut flower plant: The long stems and durable flower heads hold well indoors and are worth growing for picking.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, early spring where winters are cold and wet
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is not negotiable. Sandy or gravelly soils suit it best; on the heavier clays of the eastern states plant on a raised mound and mulch with gravel. Use low phosphorus native fertiliser only, and never manure.
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer to settle the root ball, then reduce quickly, since prolonged wet soil in warm weather is the usual cause of sudden collapse. Tip prune after flowering each year to keep the shrub compact, and avoid cutting back into old bare wood, which reshoots poorly.
