Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Woolly Tea Tree - Leptospermum lanigerum
Silver-grey and softly furred, the woolly tea tree earns its name in the hand: new shoots and young leaves are covered in fine silky hairs that give the whole shrub a muted, dusty tone. Leptospermum lanigerum is the tea tree for cold and damp sites, growing naturally along creek lines and in swampy heath from Tasmania through Victoria to the New South Wales highlands, and it will tolerate ground that stays wet in winter, which very few grey-foliage shrubs will do.
Why Woolly Tea Tree
Silver Foliage: Densely hairy grey-green leaves hold their colour year round and lift dark green native plantings.
Damp Ground Tolerance: Naturally occurs on swamp margins and streambanks, so it accepts soils that stay moist through winter.
Frost Hardiness: Comfortable in genuinely cold districts including the Tasmanian midlands and the alpine foothills.
Spring Flowering: Small white five-petalled flowers cover the branches in late spring and early summer.
Dense Twiggy Habit: Fine branching provides shelter and nesting cover for small birds.
Ideal Applications
Creek and Swale Planting: Ideal along watercourses and bioretention basins where soil moisture fluctuates.
Informal Native Screen: Planted in a row it forms a soft, textural barrier without the rigidity of a clipped hedge.
Cold Climate Garden Shrub: A reliable grey-toned filler in tablelands and Tasmanian gardens.
Bird Habitat: Massed in groups it provides dense low cover for wrens and finches.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring; spring is safer in the coldest districts
Soil & Drainage: Acidic to neutral soils, from sandy loam to clay loam, tolerating seasonally wet ground but not permanent stagnant water
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist for the first summer rather than letting it swing between soaked and bone dry. Mulch with a coarse organic mulch, and tip prune lightly after flowering each year to keep the shrub dense from the base.
