Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Burgundy Tea Tree - Leptospermum morrisonii ‘Burgundy’
This tea tree is grown for its foliage first and its flowers second. The fine, needle-like leaves of Leptospermum morrisonii ‘Burgundy’ carry a burgundy-bronze flush that deepens through the cooler months, on a graceful shrub with softly weeping outer growth. Spring brings a heavy covering of small white flowers along the stems. It is one of the most useful native screening shrubs available because it is dense from the ground up, drought hardy, and reliably tolerant of frost and poor soil.
Why the Burgundy Tea Tree
Coloured fine foliage: Burgundy-toned needle foliage gives texture and colour that few native screens offer.
Weeping habit: Arching outer branches soften fence lines and read far better than a flat clipped face.
Spring flowering: Small white flowers cover the plant heavily in spring, attracting native bees and insects.
Dense to ground level: Holds foliage low on the plant, so there is no bare-legged gap under the screen.
Hardiness: Handles frost, drought, poor soil and coastal exposure once established.
Ideal Applications
Native screening hedge: A close-planted row gives a 3m informal screen within a few seasons.
Windbreak edge: Fine foliage filters wind rather than blocking it, reducing turbulence on the leeward side.
Bank and slope stabilisation: Fibrous roots bind soil on cuttings and embankments.
Bush garden backdrop: Its dark tone throws lighter native foliage forward in mixed plantings.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring in temperate districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soils from sand to light clay; prefers slightly acidic ground and dislikes prolonged waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then only in extended dry periods. Mulch to 75mm keeping the collar clear, tip prune lightly after flowering to maintain density, and never cut back into bare old wood because tea trees do not reliably reshoot from it.
