Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Blackdown Tableland Fan Palm - Livistona fulva
Confined in the wild to the sandstone escarpments of the Blackdown Tableland in central Queensland, Livistona fulva is set apart by colour. The underside of every fan is coated in a dense rusty tan felt that flashes copper whenever the fronds move, so the whole crown changes tone with the wind. Older plants hold a slim, clean grey trunk beneath a tight rounded head. Being a dry country palm, it handles heat, exposure and poor sandy soil far better than the tropical fan palms it is usually shelved beside.
Why Blackdown Tableland Fan Palm
Bronze Reverse: The tawny felted underside is the feature, and it is strongest on plants grown in full sun.
Drought Hardiness: Adapted to shallow sandstone soils and long dry spells once the root system is down.
Slender Trunk: A narrow grey column takes up little ground space in a courtyard.
Compact Crown: The head stays tight and rounded rather than sprawling, so it stays in scale.
Cold Tolerance: Handles light frost once trunking, which few fan palms of this look will do.
Handle with care: The leaf stalks carry spines along their margins. Wear gloves when trimming and allow clearance beside paths, driveways and seating areas.
Ideal Applications
Pool Surround: Clean trunk and modest litter suit paved edges.
Courtyard Feature: A single plant reads as a sculptural column in a small space.
Repeated Rows: Evenly spaced along a driveway it gives rhythm without heavy shade.
Dry Inland Gardens: One of the better fan palms for hot, low humidity inland districts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gravelly free draining soil, tolerant of poor sandstone country but not of waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, then reduce to occasional deep soakings. Mulch the root zone but keep the crown and trunk base clear, and apply a slow release palm fertiliser in spring and again in midsummer.
