Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Muttonwood - Myrsine variabilis
Muttonwood is one of those quiet rainforest species that solves problems rather than demanding attention. Myrsine variabilis makes a dense, upright shrub or small tree with glossy leaves that carry a distinctive wavy or crinkled margin, and it fruits along the older stems in small purple to blue black berries that birds work through steadily. It tolerates deep shade, which puts it in a very short list of natives that will screen under an existing canopy.
Why Muttonwood
Deep Shade Ability: A natural understorey species, it stays leafy and dense in positions that defeat most screening plants.
Stem Fruiting: Tiny cream flowers and then dark berries cluster directly on the older wood, an unusual detail up close.
Leaf Character: The wavy edged, glossy foliage gives movement and light catch without any variegation.
Bird Feeding: The fruit is a food source for silvereyes, pigeons and other small rainforest birds.
Upright Growth: It grows narrow rather than spreading, which suits tight side setbacks and courtyards.
Ideal Applications
Shaded screening: A row along a fence in a shaded side yard where light levels rule out other species.
Rainforest understorey: The mid layer in a layered planting beneath established canopy trees.
Narrow garden bed: Its upright habit suits beds only a metre or so wide.
Bushland regeneration: Widely used in east coast rainforest and riparian restoration work.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres
