Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Narrow Lobed Philodendron - Philodendron stenolobum
Long, slender, wavy edged leaves on a short, thick trunk give this tree philodendron from eastern Brazil a finer and more upright outline than the broad, ruffled selloum it is related to. Philodendron stenolobum is now often listed under Thaumatophyllum, the genus botanists use for the trunk forming tree philodendrons. Landscape designers reach for it when a tropical scheme needs bold foliage with a linear, architectural character.
Why Narrow Lobed Philodendron
Linear Leaf Form: The elongated, undulating blades add vertical movement that contrasts with round leaved aroids and the fans of palms.
Freestanding Trunk: With age it lifts its crown on a short, thick, scarred trunk, so it stands on its own without a pole or tying.
Tough Leaves: The heavy, leathery blades hold up in breezy, open courtyard positions that would shred softer tropical foliage.
Morning Sun Tolerance: Like others in the tree philodendron group it accepts morning sun outdoors as well as bright shade, so it can go on the east side of a house as readily as under trees.
Toxic Sap: The sap and leaves carry calcium oxalate, which blisters and swells the mouth if chewed and can redden skin, so it is sited clear of play spaces and away from pets, and old leaves are cut off with gloves on.
Ideal Applications
Architectural Feature: Given a raised bed of its own beside a modern entry, its upright crown of slender leaves works as living sculpture.
Mid Layer Texture: Between bird of paradise, cordylines and clumping palms it adds a fine, upright texture at mid height in a layered planting.
Blank Wall Relief: Spaced along a deep bed in front of a fence or blank wall, it breaks up long hard surfaces with bold foliage at eye level.
Large Courtyard Pots: A broad, heavy container suits it in a courtyard or on a balcony, and the weight stops the tall crown tipping the pot in a gust.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m, leaving room for the crown to reach its full width
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, while the soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Loose, well aerated soil built up with compost and coarse bark; it rots if water lies around the trunk through winter
Establishment Care: Give a deep drink twice weekly from planting until autumn, then let the surface dry out between waterings through the cool months. Scatter a controlled release fertiliser around the root zone as spring growth begins, and cover young plants on frosty nights, since frost marks the leaves. Older plants send thick aerial roots across the ground, so it is planted a metre or more back from paths and paving.
