Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Olive (Espalier) - Olea europaea
An olive trained flat is a piece of living Mediterranean architecture: grey-green leaves with silver undersides on a geometric framework, evergreen through winter, and productive once mature. Olea europaea takes to espalier because it responds well to hard pruning and reshoots from old wood, so the framework can be corrected and renewed over decades. It is the obvious choice for a hot, dry, north or west-facing wall where reflected heat would cook most other trained plants.
Why an Espaliered Olive
Evergreen Structure: Unlike a deciduous espalier it screens and decorates the wall all twelve months.
Silver Foliage: The grey-green leaf with a silvered reverse catches wind and light beautifully against render or stone.
Extreme Toughness: Heat, drought, alkaline soil, salt wind and poor fertility are all within its comfort range.
Fruiting Wood: Olives fruit on the previous season's growth, so leave some unpruned young wood each year if you want a crop.
Climate for Fruit: Reliable cropping needs a cool winter and a dry spring, so humid subtropical gardens should treat it as ornamental rather than productive.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Hot Wall Cladding: Softens a large blank masonry face in full afternoon sun.
Narrow Side Passages: Fits a bed too shallow for any free-standing tree.
Formal Mediterranean Gardens: Its geometry suits gravel, lavender and clipped hedging schemes.
Coastal Courtyards: Handles salt-laden wind that would burn most trained fruit.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5-3m along a wall or wire run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3.5-4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding midsummer
Soil & Drainage: Free draining above all else, and happy in alkaline, rocky or shallow soils. Heavy wet clay causes root rot and is the main reason espaliered olives fail.
Establishment Care: Tie the arms to wires 400mm apart with soft ties checked annually so they do not cut into thickening wood. Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, then only monthly, and prune after harvest to keep the framework open, remembering that shearing everything back removes next season's fruiting wood.
