Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Tolley’s Upright Olive - Olea europaea ‘Tolley’s Upright’
An olive that grows up rather than out. Olea europaea ‘Tolley’s Upright’ is an Australian selection with a narrow, near columnar habit, holding its silver grey foliage on ascending branches instead of the wide open vase shape of a fruiting olive. That footprint is the whole point: it screens a boundary or lines a driveway in about a third of the width a standard olive demands.
Why Tolley’s Upright Olive
Narrow columnar form: Mature width stays around 1.5 to 2.5m, so it fits beside fences, driveways and buildings.
Screening from a small footprint: A single row delivers height without eating into usable garden space.
Silver foliage all year: The grey green canopy holds colour through summer heat and winter cold alike.
Drought and heat proof: Established trees carry through long dry spells and reflected heat from paving and walls.
Light fruiting: It carries small black fruit, which is worth siting away from pale paving where staining would be a nuisance.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Narrow side boundary: The classic use, a row of upright columns screening a neighbour along a tight side setback.
Driveway avenue: Repeated at even spacing it gives a formal rhythm without shading the drive.
Clipped columns: It responds well to light shaping into formal pillars flanking an entry.
Large planters and podium gardens: The restrained root system and narrow crown suit rooftop and courtyard planters.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring to autumn into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Any free draining soil including sand, gravel and alkaline loams; heavy wet clay must be mounded or drained first
Establishment Care: Give it a deep weekly soak through the first summer, tapering to fortnightly in the second, and keep grass and weeds off the root zone. Mulch clear of the trunk, and trim only the odd wayward branch, since hard pruning opens the column and takes years to close up again.
