Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bambalina Olive - Olea europaea ‘Bambalina’
‘Bambalina’ was selected as a naturally small, tight growing olive for gardens where a full sized Olea europaea would be too much tree and far too much fruit litter. It builds a dense, fine textured grey green shrub or small tree that takes clipping readily, and it sets only a light crop of small fruit. That combination has made it a default choice for formal olive hedges, clipped balls and paved courtyards.
Why Bambalina Olive
Compact Habit: Naturally dense and small at 2 to 3m, without the constant heading back a standard olive demands.
Fine Foliage: Smaller, narrower leaves than a fruiting olive with a silver reverse, holding a crisp clipped face.
Light Fruit Set: Produces only a sparse crop of small fruit, which greatly reduces staining and cleanup over paving.
Drought Hardiness: Deep roots and silvered foliage let it run on very little water once established.
Exposure Tolerance: Handles salt wind, reflected heat and moderate frost, so it suits coastal and inland gardens equally.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Clipped hedge: Planted in a row it shears into a formal grey green hedge of 1 to 2m.
Topiary: Dense growth holds balls, cones and cloud forms with two trims a year.
Pot and courtyard: Slow, restrained growth makes it one of the better olives for long term container culture.
Dry garden bed: Sits comfortably with lavender, rosemary, santolina and gravel mulch.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8-1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2-2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding cold wet soil in mid winter
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential, sandy loam, gravel or raised beds, tolerant of alkaline and poor soils, fails in wet clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then only during extended dry spells. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark, keep the base clear, and shear lightly after the spring flush to build density.
