Correggiola Olive - Olea europaea ‘Correggiola’
Correggiola is a Tuscan oil cultivar and one of the mainstays of the Australian olive oil industry, valued for consistently high oil content and a peppery, well structured fruit. As a landscape tree Olea europaea gives what few evergreens can: grey green foliage that flickers silver in wind, a gnarled trunk that gains character every decade, and near total indifference to drought, heat and alkaline soil. This cultivar carries a productive crop as well, so it earns its place twice over.
Why Correggiola
Oil quality: A proven oil variety with high yield and good flavour, widely planted commercially in southern Australia.
Silver foliage: Grey green leaves with pale undersides shimmer in wind and lighten a dark planting scheme.
Drought hardiness: Once established it survives long dry periods on natural rainfall in Mediterranean climates.
Frost tolerance: It handles cold to around minus 7 degrees once mature, more than most subtropical fruiting trees.
Ages well: The trunk thickens, twists and fissures with time, so the tree becomes more valuable the longer it stays.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Driveway avenue: A repeated line of olives is one of the most reliable formal plantings for hot dry Australian sites.
Productive home grove: Planted in a block it delivers a genuine annual harvest for oil or table curing.
Mediterranean courtyard: A single multi trunked tree in a gravel courtyard sets the entire garden's character.
Windbreak on dry land: Its tolerance of exposure, poor soil and drought suits it to rural boundary planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m centres for a screen or grove row, 5 to 6m for a commercial planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6m centres for an avenue, and at least 3m clear of paving and structures
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding cold waterlogged winter soil and midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Free draining above all else. Rocky, sandy, shallow and alkaline soils all suit it, and waterlogging kills it
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, then reduce to occasional deep soakings during flowering and fruit fill only. Mulch to 75mm kept clear of the trunk, keep grass competition off the root zone for the first three years, and prune in late winter to open the centre for light and air.
